The Bellarine Rail Trail is now chicane free from Geelong to Drysdale!
After a long period of advocacy, petitioning and pleading, the Geelong council has removed the bulky, tight and dangerous chicanes from a big stretch of the trail.
The chicanes were difficult to get around for many trail users (cargo bikes, bikes with trailers, prams, wheelchairs). The Geelong residents will get more use out of the trail now that it is more accessible and attractive to all users.
Thanks to Council for listening and taking action.
Thanks to Bikesafe for their advocacy
Thanks to our committee who helped to get these impediments removed, with special thanks to Mark Boyanton (our rep at the Bellarine Rail Trail Advisory Committee) and Brett Cleeland for the hard work over a long period of time.

Chicanes removed and replaced at Christies Rd.

Kensington road Leopold gets the treatment.
Congratulations to all involved in this achievement, which gives heart to those of us campaigning for the removal of chicanes on our own local trails. How so many of them came to be constructed is a mystery to me. They absolutely do not contribute to cyclists’ safety.
