A number of Geelong region buses are now displaying bicycle safety messages. McHarry’s Buslines are taking part in the Bike Safe campaign for improved safety for cyclists by displaying the messages on the back of 20 of their buses.
The messages encourage motorists to allow at least 1 metre gap when passing cyclists. Being on the back of the buses, they are ideally placed to get the message to the intended recipients.
The signs carrying the message are well designed, showing a car beside 2 cyclists who are riding abreast. This may help reduce the common misconception that cyclists must ride in single file, as well as reinforcing the legitimacy of cyclists on the road.
